Everyone has certain expectations on film based on cast, crew or previous films, but trailer only gives us fair expectation. Unfortunately producers have not released any trailer. NERAM was the best Nivin Pauly-Alphonse Putharan film.Let us see about Premam which exceeded all my expectations.
The basic plot of the movie is a simple one that goes through the life of a man from his teenage days until he gets married.(2000-2005-2014)
It begins with a 10th standard pass out, George (Nivin Pauly), who is in an fascinating chapter of his life and further shows the different moods of his love life. He is someone you can relate to, simply because at some point of your life, you would have seen things or thought like George. With his performance in "Premam", it would be unfair to describe Nivin as just a good romantic actor, as after watching the film you can understand George like a friend, who shared his heartbreaks, failures and struggles. And, you feel good when he finds his soul mate.In the film, George come across as a common man who talks, dances, laughs, and perceives himself as one of us and if an actor comes close to that, it only means he has reached the stature of a star. His rough look with beard and mustache was kickass to audience. My favorite scenes- 1) George beating peon with Matha Pithu Guru Dhaivam dialogue and modulation in the next second. 2) George and Malar looking in to their eyes close up shots. 3) George coming out from Malar’s house with tears in his eyes.
There are two characters in this movie who drive George, his close friends Koya (Krishnan Shankar) and Shambu (Sabareesh). They help you to understand George, in fact they complete his life.
Coming to the three leading ladies of the movie, Mary George (Anupama Parameshwaran), Malar (Sai Pallavi) and Celine (Madonna Sebastian), who are part of the three phases of George's life. They come across to him as three seasons that evoke varied emotions in him. Mary was just an infatuation, Malar is his love and Celine his lifelong partner. His infatuation makes him weep like a child, his love makes him a stronger man and his life partner brings warmth to his life.
Mary is someone who enjoys fanfare around her, Malar is enigmatic and Celine has a different background. The most endearing of all three romantic stories is the one with Malar. There is a magic to it that you don't want to miss.
Coming back to the casting, another person who will impress you with mass appeal is Renji Panicker, playing George's father. He takes the excitement level of the movie to a new height with a single scene.Joseph(Ohm Shanthi Oshaana Director) as Dolly(with Glass) and not to forget, the director has also managed to come across as a decent actor (The guy who is responsible for petrol price hike) with his guest appearance. There was also a bunch of new faces who gave brilliant performance in the best way possible.
Coming back to the technicalities of the film, they are just flawless. Rajesh Murugesan had scored standout songs that are sucha earworm material - My picks Aluva Puzha & Malare! The violins in the latter is pure bliss. Background score from the Anwar Rasheed Entertainment Card to Ending card Impeccable.Sound departments had given their best,Period! Especially that Ship siren from port while George and celine(having cake baked by george) conversation blown my mind. Cinematography by Anend C. Chandran was stupendous.Perfect Editing, Natural ART, Costumes and other departments have come together to materialize Alphonse Putharen's fantasy.
What will impress you about the movie is the way Alphonse Putharen has conceived this simple story in the most heavenly manner. The magic lies in the way he shaped the character, his story and how he visualised the movie. The film is technically, aesthetically and visually flawless as an entertainer. Capturing the crush looks when George enters in to class, Placing of Sad version of Malare and that end credit scene of George and Celine having ice-cream was purely genius.
"Premam" will bring back some sweet-sour memories to any 90's kid. From the very first frame of special thanks to “GOD,SUN,TIME,LOVE and Ex-Girlfriends” of the movie till the last word in the thanks card, everything about it will leave you with a smile on your face. “Butterflies are Mentally Mental. So is LOVE”.
To conclude, "Premam" is the combination of stages of life, tragedy, and the fuzzy warmth of new love is absolutely flawless. In one word CLASSIC.
5/5 Stars.
Extraordinary PREMAM team:
1. When George writing a letter, you can observe Date,Place,Pincode format which we used to write in our childhood days.
2. When Mary comes to canteen to buy Parle-g biscuit packet, director shows us the eatables which are available in that period(2000)
3. In the first song(in church where hero sungs)you can hear resound this is what we call the best sound mixing, ok i will give another scene, in cafe while George asking Celine whether he can come to her home you can hear Ship siren sounds (there is a port near cafe)
4. Hero friends smoking scene: Closely observe the packet of Goldflake packet, same one you can find it in shirt pocket of a guy(yellow shirt who speaks arabic) who proposes mary, which is 2000 edition.
5. Mobiles related to that period(2005) and standing beside window while talking(signal problems in those days).
6. Teasing sir with one word(Mava=Java),which we used to do it in our days.
